The Wicker Man (1973) – BBC iPlayer

The absolute blueprint of folk horror. Fans of Midsommar (2019) should treat this film as a kind of pilgrimage that they need to undertake; Homage must be paid.

The Wicker Man perfected what films like Witchfinder General (1968) and — a favorite of mine — The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971) laid the groundwork for.

With British horror icon Sir Christopher Lee giving a commanding performance as Lord Summerisle, it's definitely one to add to your list this spooky season.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) – BBC iPlayer

When someone says the word Halloween, one of the universal images that springs to mind is a vampire. Who, you might ask, is the most famous of all the vampires? Well it's not Count Von Count, nor is it Count Orlok. No, the world's most famous vampire, undeniably, is Count Dracula.

First appearing in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel of the same name, Dracula has captured imagination's ever since, said to be loosely based on Vlad the Impaler.

The 1992 adaptation stars Gary Oldman, Winona Rider, Keanu Reaves and Anthony Hopkins, and it's mandatory viewing every spooky season.

Heretic (2025) – Amazon Prime

Hugh Grant is normally a staple of cosy Christmas films — think Love Actually and others of that ilk. I know that round my house one of the Bridget Jones' usually makes an appearance in that liminal limbo-time between Christmas Day and New Years'. It's for that reason that you'd be forgiven to not expect to see him on this list.

HOWEVER, in a huge change of pace, he stepped away from the foppish, mumbling Hugh Grant-isms of Four Weddings and into a seriously creepy role for A24's Heretic.

Nocturne

Apple TV's new crime drama Nocturne features Adolescence star Stephen Graham as cunning serial killer, Jurek Walter, who terrorises the town of Fairhaven in Pennsylvania, despite being in prison.

The 10-parter follows ex-soldier and retired police detective Jonah Lynn (Liev Schreiber) as he relocates to the town for a quiet life. However, Jonah, who helped put Jurek behind bars, is soon pulled back into the criminal's terrifying orbit when his family come under threat.

A search for Jurek's last missing victim forces Jonah to send FBI Agent Saga Bauer (Zazie Beetz) up against Jurek. But how far will he go to end Jurek's reign of terror once and for all?

The love story spans four decades where we see them face obstacles in both themselves and the world, including the 1960s protests of the Vietnam War, the drug-fuelled hedonism of the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

VisionQuest

Paul Bettany returns as a new version of Marvel superhero Vision in this Disney+ series, which concludes the epic trilogy after WandaVision and Agatha All Along on 14 October.

Three Women

In this adaptation of Lisa Taddeo's novel of the same name, three women each take radical steps to reclaim their lives when they tell their relationship stories to writer Gia (Shailene Woodley), who narrates their complicated personal experiences throughout the series.

Three Women features an all-star cast of Betty Gilpin as Lina, who is living in deeply religious America where her husband refuses to be intimate with her anymore, DeWanda Wise as Sloan, a successful woman in a loving but open marriage, and Gabrielle Creevy as Maggie, a young woman traumatised by a relationship she had with her married high school teacher.

The first three episodes debut on Channel 4 on 4 October.

R.J. Decker season 2

R.J. Decker is back to investigate more quirky crimes in the second season of the hit dramedy, which is currently airing on Disney+. Scott Speedman reprises his role as the titular disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in South Florida.

Inspired by Carl Hiaasen’s 1987 novel Double Whammy, the show sees R.J. tackle a series of offbeat and dangerous cases alongside his journalist ex and her police detective wife.

Sheriff Country

As Fire Country continues to entertain audiences with its blazing drama, so does its spin-off, Sheriff Country on Paramount+. The police procedural focuses on Mickey Fox (Morena Baccarin), a straight-shooting sheriff in the small town of Edgewater, and step sister of Cal Fire's division chief Sharon Leone (Diane Farr of Fire Country).

In Sheriff Country, Mickey "investigates criminal activity while she patrols the streets of Edgewater, contending with her ex-con father, Wes (W. Earl Brown), who is an off-the-grid marijuana grower, and a mysterious incident involving her wayward daughter.”

Although Blue Bloods has officially ended, the crime drama's legacy lives on with the spin-off series Boston Blue, which follows NYPD cop Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) as he moves from the Big Apple to Boston.

When Danny's son Sean (Mika Amonsen) is seriously injured in a building fire, he takes a position with Boston PD and teams up with detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family, to investigate the blaze.

American Hostage

Jon Hamm plays a real-life 1970s radio host embroiled in a kidnapping ordeal in this crime thriller on MGM+.

Based on the scripted podcast of the same name, American Hostage "tells the harrowing true story of Fred Heckman, a beloved Indianapolis radio reporter who is thrust into the middle of a life-or-death crisis when hostage-taker Tony Kiritsis demands to be interviewed on his popular radio news program."

Outlander: Blood of my Blood season 2

Epic romantic saga Outlander: Blood of my Blood returns to chart the love story between Claire's parents — played by Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine), and Jamie's parents — played by Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy).

After the explosive season 1 finale, the second series sees the young couples torn apart once again as the clans are thrust into war when the Scottish Highlands split in two by the 1715 Jacobite Rising.

For Henry and Julia, it picks up from their reunion at the standing stones of Craigh na Dun and reveals a distraught Julia alone with their baby. Henry must grapple with his mental health as he fights to find his way back to her.

Meanwhile, after Brian and Ellen chose each other over their families, they now must prioritise their clan loyalties as Brian fulfils his obligation to fight and Ellen wants to make amends with her family.

Route 187

Tyler Perry has another creation to add to his sprawling TV catalogue with the arrival of Route 187. The crime drama follows a journalist who uncovers dark secrets as he seeks the truth behind grisly murders on a notorious bus route.

The Reacher universe has expanded — and this time it's Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) pulling the punches. In this spin-off to the hit action series, Sten reprises her role as Neagley, a private investigator and former military protégé of Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) in the Army's 110th Special Investigations Unit.

Using everything she's learned from Jack Reacher and her time at the 110 Special Investigators, Neagley embarks on a mission for justice when she discovers a friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident.

The critically acclaimed mystery series Diarra From Detroit stars Diarra Kilpatrick as the titular character, whose search for her missing Tinder date leads her down a rabbit hole into Detroit's criminal underworld.

Now in season 2, "When Diarra and Chris' (Shannon Wallace) simple furniture-recovery mission entangles them in the centre of a grizzly crime, Diarra is left desperately trying to solve a new case before it derails her life. And that means dragging her friends back down the rabbit hole into Detroit's criminal underbelly where she'll have to go undercover with a secret society, star in a Tubi movie, wrangle a troubled teenager, and generally tear up Detroit on a wild treasure hunting adventure in a way only 'Captain Extra’ could. And no, her love life isn't simple either. As Diarra contemplates what she really wants for her future, old flames heat up the summer with romance and unexpected complications."

Ryan Murphy's Disney+ drama The Shards comes to an end on 10 September, which centres on a group of elite high schoolers — in particular Bret (Igby Rigney) as his life is upended by new student Robert Mallory (Homer Gere). Robert's arrival mysteriously coincides as a serial killer called The Trawler starts targeting local teenagers.

The Rainmaker

There's law and disorder in ITV1's adaptation of John Grisham's legal thriller The Rainmaker. Milo Callaghan takes on the role of rookie lawyer Rudy Baylor, 28 years after Matt Damon played the character in the 1998 movie version of the story.

The Rainmaker follows Rudy as he goes up against his powerful former firm led by Leo F. Drummond (John Slattery) and his ex-girlfriend, Sarah (Madison Iseman), when he uncovers a dark conspiracy surrounding the mysterious death of their client’s son.

The first episode airs on 28th August, but if you can't wait for all 10 episodes, the full boxset is available from that date on ITVX.

You're Killing Me

Cosy crime drama You're Killing Me continues on U&Drama, which centres on an unlikely duo — mystery novelist Allison ‘Allie’ Chandler (Brooke Shields) and young but cynical true-crime podcaster Andrea ‘Andi’ Wallace (Amalia Jane Williamson). Despite their clashing personalities, the pair prove to be an unexpected crime-solving duo in their fictional town of Founders Cove.

In episode 3 airing on 4 September, a copycat killer torments Founders Cove by recreating murders from Allie's novels. As fear spreads across the town, Allie, Andi, and Jack (Tom Cavanagh) must catch the criminal before they strike again.

Season 1 of the show saw John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor (Mitchell) masquerading as his missing brother James, a detective in the Cambridge force. Anxious and awkward, John worked to uncover the truth from the inside, with more than a little persuasion from his sister-in-law Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin). However going deep cover means playing the role to its fullest, and soon John found himself putting his master puzzle-setter skills to use, solving the most ludicrous and impossible of crimes. Even when the truth was discovered, John was invited back into the fold as a Crime Scene Consultant, which is where we find him in season 2, working alongside DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola) and the other members of the local authority.

But with James still missing and John now forbidden from using any official police resource in the hunt for his sibling, the genius case cracker must solve the biggest puzzle of all without a cheat sheet.

Also returning this season are Dorothy Atkinson as senior officer DCS Carol Shaw, Karl Pilkington as James’ former police partner DI Matt Neville and Ralph Ineson as shady Chief Constable Ziegler. Mark Bonnar joins the cast as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher, alongside Sian Clifford as local MP Joanne Kemper.

Sky Atlantic is getting a haunting new arrival as the third season of hit horror anthology The Terror: Devil in Silver premieres on 23 August.

Based on Victor LaValle's 2012 novel of the same name, the six-parter stars Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) as Pepper, whose combination of bad luck and a bad temper sees him wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital. As he attempts to escape the grim facility, he faces patients working against him, doctors hiding dark secrets, and possibly the Devil himself.

Fightland

There's body blows and bloodshed in this gritty crime thriller, executive produced by US rapper Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson.

Fightland follows British boxer Duke Kilroy (Howard Charles) as he seeks vengeance on those who betrayed him. On the night he becomes heavyweight champion, his brother Calvin is killed in a violent assault. The aftermath sees Duke jailed for eight years in a US prison, but on his release he plots revenge against crime boss Kingsley Marshall (Nicholas Pinnock), who he believes set him up. Duke joins forces with a cartel to infiltrate Kingsley's empire and destroy it from within so when Kingsley returns, Duke will strike with the ultimate payback.

Tyler Perry's Beauty in Black season 3

The fan-favourite Netflix drama from creator Tyler Perry centres on Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams), a former exotic dancer who becomes embroiled with the powerful Bellarie family. She eventually becomes the chief operating officer of their haircare empire, until she unearths their connections to a dangerous criminal underworld.

Following on from season 2's dramatic cliffhanger, the final series will bring "Kimmie's journey with the Bellarie family to an epic conclusion" and see her “step fully into her power with all of the support she needs."

Outer Banks season 5

We're going on one last adventure with the Pogues as the fifth and final season of hit Netflix drama Outer Banks premieres on 20 August.

Based on the DC comic Green Lantern, this TV show adaptation brings the iconic heroes to the American heartland. Lanterns follows intergalactic cops John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), who become embroiled in a dark mystery with extra-terrestrial ties as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska.

The HBO series also stars Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

Reacher season 4

Prime Video's biggest tough guy is back with a bang as Reacher punches his way onto our screens for the fourth time. Alan Ritchson returns as author Lee Child's Jack Reacher character for the hit action thriller, which is based on Child's 13th book, Gone Tomorrow.

The official plot synopsis of Reacher season 4 reads: "When a chance encounter with a distraught stranger on a subway goes horribly wrong, Jack Reacher is drawn into a complex and deadly game that pits him against ruthless foes from the highest echelons of power."

The Shards

Ryan Murphy has another TV creation to add to his ever-expanding screen repertoire with the seductive Disney+ drama The Shards. Based on Bret Easton Ellis’s bestselling novel, it follows an elite group of high schoolers who navigate identity, sex, jealousy, obsession and the dangers of American adolescence in 1980s Los Angeles.

The Shards focuses on Bret (Igby Rigney), an aspiring writer whose reality falls apart when new student Robert Mallory (Homer Gere) arrives just as a serial killer called The Trawler starts targeting local teenagers.

The series also stars Kaia Gerber, Hayes Warner, Graham Campbell, Wes Bentley, and Evan Rachel Wood.

Lioness season 3

Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman are back on the front lines in Taylor Sheridan's epic Paramount+ spy thriller, Lioness.

The Yellowstone creator has swapped his signature dusty neo-Western dramas for a female-led espionage nail-biter which sees chaos ensue when "hidden networks, foreign operatives, and personal betrayals collide" as the Lioness team embark on a personal assignment.

The Vampire Lestat: Interview with the Vampire season 3

Former Shameless star Emmy Rossum takes on the role of FBI agent, Alice Black in this new Disney+ crime drama. Premiering on 27 July, Furious follows Alice who is on the hunt for an elusive female serial killer. However, as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur.

Furious also stars Lola Petticrew, Scoot McNairy, Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Jake Lacy.

Ramy season 3

The hit comedy-drama, Ramy, returns for a third season on Channel 4 this week which stars Ramy Youssef as Ramy Hassan, a first-generation Egyptian-American who tries to navigate his faith in his politically-divided New Jersey neighbourhood.

In season 3, two years have passed since Zainab (MaameYaa Boafo) left Ramy after he cheated on her. This time, Ramy abandons his spiritual journey for wealth as he starts working at his Uncle Naseem's (Laith Nakli) jewellery business in New York's Diamond District.

While Messi earned nothing but admiration, England's latest tournament disappointment prompted a less charitable response from the viral 'Recyclon'.

Binface questioned why Gareth Southgate's successor appeared to repeat the tactical mistakes that frustrated fans during England's run.

"You stick a bloke in specifically to do not what Gareth did in the latter stages of the tournament. And he goes and does the same damn thing! What's that about?"

He added: "He took all his attacking players off while he was winning."

The retreat, Binface joked, resembled a political U-turn.

"Seeing someone come from such a position of strength to having to shore up their defences. It was a sort of Keir Starmer performance."

While dismissing suggestions he could take over from Thomas Tuchal as England manager, Binface revealed a grander ambition:

"If I was to have a second job, I think I'd more have my eye on the FIFA presidency."

His first campaign promise?

"Ban that Infantino bloke from the clouds because they keep showing footage of him for about 10 minutes of every game. It's very irritating."

Despite abandoning her life of crime years ago, Lucky must embrace her darker side one last time as she's pursued by the FBI and a ruthless crime boss.

Bullets and bloodshed ignite the streets of 1980s New York in MGM+'s gangland thriller The Westies on 12 July.

The official plot synopsis reads: "The Westies is a gritty and kinetic crime drama centering on New York City’s infamously violent Irish gang of the same name. The series is set in the early 1980s when the construction of the Jacob Javits Convention Center on the Westies’ home turf in Hell’s Kitchen promises a financial windfall. Despite being outnumbered fifty-to-one by the Five Families of the Italian Mafia, the Westies’ legendary brutality and cunning have given them the leverage necessary to share the spoils through a fragile détente.

Coming to Disney+ on 14 July, this dramedy centres on R.J. Decker (Scott Speedman), a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in the colourful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida.

The series sees him tackle bizarre cases with his journalist ex Catherine Delacroix (Adelaide Clemens), her police detective wife Melody Abreu (Bevin Bru) and a mysterious new benefactor "who could be his greatest ally or his one-way ticket back to prison."

Law & Order season 24

21 episodes and a new commanding officer later, the hit crime procedural Law & Order season 24 is coming to an end on 7 July. Now in the finale, the murder of a model leads Detectives Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) to a suspect whose obsession turned violent.

Citizen Vigilante is the viral movie from director Uwe Boll, pairing the controversial filmmaker with Armie Hammer in his first leading role since returning to Hollywood. There's more culinary chaos in the final season of critically acclaimed dramedy The Bear, which picks up after Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), Richie and Natalie “Sugar” (Abby Elliott) discover that Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) has walked away from the restaurant and left them to run the business. The new partners must try to earn a Michelin star with no money, the threat of a sale and a torrential storm in their way. Although they soon realise that what makes a restaurant “perfect” might not be the food, but the people.

House of the Dragon season 3

Betrayal and bloodshed await as House of the Dragon season 3 swoops onto our screens on 22 June. In the third instalment of the Game of Thrones prequel, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) is confident of peace after agreeing a deal with her arch-enemy Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) that will allow her to waltz into King's Landing unchallenged.

Unfortunately, her plans soon turn to ash as she fears for the life of her son Prince Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett) in the Battle of the Gullet. Happy Valley star James Norton joins the cast as fearsome new foe and Alicent's cousin Ormond, while Matt Smith returns as Daemon Targaryen.

Season 2 of the Game of Thrones prequel left us with an exiled and injured King, a fleet of low-born Dragon riders and a continent-wide mobilisation of armies on both sides of the sibling squabble. Now, as noble Houses across Westeros march in favour of numerous claimants to the Iron Throne, the only thing promised is death and destruction on a franchise-first scale.

While the full outcome of the Dance of Dragons is out there (the show is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel), much of what to expect for unsullied viewers is being kept under wraps for now. Showrunner Ryan Condal teased the opening episode’s Battle of the Gullet as "arguably the craziest episode of television ever made." And boy did it deliver, with the pivotal battle getting things off to a ferocious start with action and carnage on a scale never before seen in the franchise during a huge naval clash that made the Battle of the Blackwater look like a playground skirmish, with not everyone making it out alive.

The usual cast return, including Emma D'Arcy (Rhaenyra), Matt Smith (Daemon), Olivia Cooke (Alicent), Harry Collett (Jacaerys), Steve Toussaint (Corlys), Bethany Antonia (Baela), Phoebe Campbell (Rhaena), and Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria), Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon), Ewan Mitchell (Aemond), Phia Saban (Helaena), Fabien Frankel (Criston Cole), Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower), and Matthew Needham (Larys Strong) and Freddie Fox (Gwayne Hightower). Also look out for Happy Valley's James Norton, who joins the cast as Ormund Hightower, the Lord of Oldtown and cousin to Queen Alicent. This being A Song of Ice and Fire, however, who knows how long anyone will stick around.

Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Stanley Tucci are throwing themselves into more exciting espionage as they reprise their roles for the second season of Prime Video's hit spy series Citadel on May 6.

The trio return as elite operatives Mason Kane, Nadia Sinh and Bernard Orlick who work for a global spy agency that was destroyed by a powerful syndicate eight years ago. Daredevil: Born Again season 2

While a new series begins on Prime Video, one comes to an end on Disney+ this week. The final episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 premieres on May 6, which stars Charlie Cox as the titular masked vigilante (aka Matt Murdock) and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk.

Gadd created, wrote and stars in the new drama alongside Jamie Bell, playing childhood friends Ruben and Niall, once as close as brothers, now navigating adulthood apart. Much of Gadd’s previous work has explored masculinity, particularly Netflix sensation Baby Reindeer, but Half Man points the lens straight at what it means to be a man in the modern world. “All of my stories explore human feelings, but this time, I wanted to come up with an idea that explores what it means to be a man in this ever-changing world through these two characters” says the writer, “I think that much of how society has been structured can lead to men having an inability to express themselves and express love and vulnerability, so it felt interesting to posit that conversation through Niall and Ruben.”
